Reduced lighting costs for Addenbrookes Hospital

Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge has significantly reduced its energy consumption and carbon footprint by upgrading over 1000 existing lighting fittings using Chalmor’s EasiFit T5 kit. As well as fast payback, a key factor in the choice of Chalmor was that this was the only conversion product on the market with EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) compliance – an important consideration in hospitals.

The EasiFit T5 kit enables fluorescent fittings using T12 or T8 tubes to be quickly converted to high efficiency T5 fluorescent light sources. In the Rosie Maternity Hospital, for example, 5ft T12 fittings in corridors were converted to 4ft T5 fittings, stripping out the existing control gear and using the EasiFit’s integral gear as this proved to be more efficient. In this way, there were reductions in installed electrical load and running costs while maintaining a comparable light output.

“The conversion in the Rosie is expected to save around £8,000 a year, giving a payback of 1.2 years, and there are additional savings on maintenance costs because of the longer lamp life, explained Maintenance Manager Ian Jackson. “In the medical records area, where T8 lamps were converted, we expect to see a payback within 1.8 years,” he added.

The project was part-funded through a grant from Salix, an independent company funded by the Carbon Trust to help public sector organisations invest in energy efficiency. Chalmor worked closely with the hospital to provide the necessary information to obtain the grant.

"The project has been a great success, the new fittings have proved to be very reliable and we’re very pleased with the results," Ian Jackson concluded.

Brilliant lighting for BVT shipbuilders

Lighting at BVT Surface Fleet’s shipbuilding facilities at HMNB Portsmouth has been greatly improved by the installation of long-life, energy efficient Brilliance fittings from Chalmor. Energy and maintenance savings achieved are expected to provide a payback of a little over a year.

Brilliance fittings have been installed in a new 4000m2 extension to production hall B and have replaced existing fittings in the 11,900m2 steel production hall.

In the steel production hall, 185 x 400W SON (high pressure sodium) fittings have been replaced, on a point for point basis, by 4 x 54W Brilliance fittings, reducing the installed electrical load by around 50%, with an increase in lighting
levels of 25%. Maintenance requirements are also reduced as the Brilliance fittings provide a useful life of at least 24,000 hours, which is 2-3 times longer than SON light sources. As a result, total annual savings on cost of ownership are predicted to be 60% with a payback of 13 months.

Hall B is currently lit using 1000W SON fittings and the original proposal for the new extension was to use 1000W metal halide fittings. Instead, BVT has opted for 6 x 80W Brilliance fittings mounted at a height of around 40m, reducing the lighting load considerably with projected savings of over 50% on lighting, including maintenance costs. These fittings use special long-life lamps with a life of 48,000 hours and the payback for this area is predicted to be 14 months.

"We have been delighted with the results and received very positive feedback from staff about the quality of the lighting,” said BVT’s Julian Amey. “We see this as the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship with Chalmor as we roll out lighting improvements to other areas in the future," he added.

Out with the old, in with the new

The new ReNew T5 from Chalmor enables existing fluorescent fittings to be upgraded to use high efficiency T5 lamps with high frequency control gear – backed by a 5-year warranty. As such, it significantly improves lighting energy performance with a customised solution that avoids the disruption and cost of installing new fittings Consequently, ReNew T5 offers a number of benefits over and above T5 adapters.

ReNew T5 provides a truly engineered solution that only re-uses the body of the old fitting. Lamps, lamp holders and control gear are all brand new – to ensure 'as new' performance and confidence of ongoing reliability. Once upgraded, fittings look new and will significantly enhance the lit environment.
Suitable for upgrading installations currently using T8 and T12 fluorescent tubes, a ReNew T5 installation not only reduces energy consumption, it also introduces a higher level of flexibility for easily introducing more advanced lighting controls. In addition, users can select from a wide selection of lamps and control gear to, for example, improve colour rendering, increase lumen maintenance, boost energy efficiency and extend lamp life. Longer lamp life will also reduce maintenance costs, providing an even faster payback.

This flexibility is further enhanced by the use of multi-wattage control gear, offering a number of key benefits. Firstly, it enables twin fittings to be converted to a single lamp of up to 80W, or twin lamp fittings can be configured to run with a single set of control gear, thus introducing further economies. Secondly, it enables light levels to be adjusted to current needs, rather than historical design parameters.

Making light work of the EPBD

Now that the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) is making its presence felt more keenly through Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), there is even more reason for building operators to take a look at their energy performance. However, there is a tendency to focus on the ‘big energy ticket’ items such as heating and air conditioning, and ignore areas where very quick performance gains can be achieved with only minimal outlay and very fast payback.

Of these ‘low hanging fruit’ options, lighting is probably the one that offers most potential – through a combination of improved control and more efficient light sources. The reality, though, is that lighting is often taken for granted and doesn’t attract the attention it deserves.

In our experience, the tendency towards more flexible working practices in many organisations means that current use of the lit space is very different from when the lighting was originally installed. Consequently, the lighting control strategy is often ‘out of synch’ with reality and is not delivering maximum benefits.

Furthermore, there are very clear benefits to upgrading to modern light sources, such T5 fluorescent lighting, and this can now be done very cost-effectively by upgrading the existing fittings rather than shelling out on a brand new installation. And it’s possible to get a 5-year warranty on the new lamps and control gear – which is longer than you will get on most new light fittings!

Of course, in these economically challenging times, people often don’t want to think about capital outlay of any sort. However, there are schemes that will pay for an upgrade through the savings achieved, so there is no capital outlay. Chalmor can help with financing energy-saving upgrades, so there couldn’t be a better time to take a fresh look at your lighting.
