“The conversion in the Rosie is expected to save around £8,000 a year, giving a payback of 1.2 years, and there are additional savings on maintenance costs because of the longer lamp life, explained the Maintenance Manager. “In the medical records area, where T8 lamps were converted, we expect to see a payback within 1.8 years,” he added.

“The project has been a great success, the new fittings have proved to be very reliable and we’re very pleased with the results,” he concluded.

The Facilities Manager of AstraZeneca’s UKFM explains: “It is quite common for lighting in plant rooms to be left on when engineers have finished working and this can be very wasteful of energy. Presence detectors are an option but there is always the danger of an engineer being hidden from the sensors behind an item of plant and being plunged into darkness”.

“To address these issues we wanted a system that would ensure lighting is turned off when the plant room is unoccupied while safeguarding any operatives working in the space. BlueWave has proved to be a very flexible and cost-effective way of achieving this. As a backstop to ensure total safety, we have rigged a small number of permanently lit lights, which give a strategic way out if someone was not totally aware of the system,” he added

“The units were certainly ahead of their time, in terms of functionality, and hail from a time when things were built to last,” commented Weetabix’s Energy and Environmental Engineer. “They continue to do a very good job so there is no reason to replace them,” he continued.

“With features such as four zones of heating control, independent self-learning, boiler sequencing and four auxiliary timed circuits these units were leading edge at the time and there was nothing comparable in that price bracket,” recalls Chalmor Managing Director Steven Henry. “Just as importantly, they were much easier to configure compared to the complex building management systems of the time. And they have certainly exploded the myth that electronics-based controllers should have a shorter life than electro-mechanical products,” he added.

Weetabix – Environmental Engineer

“The 400W high pressure sodium lighting in the equestrian centre and sports hall was switched on in the mornings and occasionally left on all day, irrespective of natural daylight levels or occupancy,” he recalled. “Consequently, upgrading the lighting to more controllable, more efficient fluorescent lighting - with additional daylight and occupancy control so we aren’t relying on people to switch off the lighting - will save the College a great deal of money,” he added.
Myerscough College – Head of Sustainability & Special Projects

“We receive significant amounts of natural daylight through the roof lights, so we can now dim the lighting to take advantage of this – something that couldn’t be done with the SON lighting,” explained the site’s Engineering Manager. ”We are also using presence detection so that if an aisle is not in use the lighting can be switched off completely.

“Of the various companies we spoke to, Chalmor not only offered the best solution with the fastest payback, they also worked closely with us to analyse lighting needs and design the optimum control solution,” he continued.

“The improved colour rendering has generated very positive comments from warehouse staff, especially on the night shift, because it makes picking much easier. The fact that we’ve been able to improve working conditions, reduce our carbon footprint and save money is a clear indication of the effectiveness of Chalmor’s lighting solution,”

Wincanton – Engineering Manager

“We carried out a life cycle costing analysis, comparing Chalmor’s Endurance fittings with T5 fluorescent fittings,” explained the University’s Property and Facilities department. “Over the life time of the installation we calculated we would save at least £50,000 by opting for the Endurance, much of it on maintenance savings because of the exceptionally long life of the fittings. Having worked with Chalmor on a previous project, we were also confident we would receive a high level of technical support,” he added.

“Users of the space have been very pleased with the higher visibility created by the new lighting, which also has significant health and safety benefits,”

Following an electrical inspection, Barr decided to re-wire the lighting at its Mansfield facility. “This seemed an appropriate time to source a more energy-efficient, less maintenance-intensive lighting solution than the existing high pressure sodium fittings,” explained the company’s representative.

“Although we originally considered high frequency fluorescent light sources, we quickly realised that the 100,000 hour life of the Endurance fittings would give us even greater savings on maintenance costs”,
“Endurance also offers better colour rendering and less depreciation of light output with time, compared to the fluorescent option,”

A G Barr ‘The Irn-Bru Company’

“We are delighted with the Endurance luminaires, which have greatly eased our maintenance workload”, commented Facilities Engineer. “With a fleet of 30 fire appliances, plus additional vehicles, the workshop is vital to our operation.

“In addition, because of the machinery being used, we had to change each fluorescent tube as soon as it failed in order to maintain safe light levels. With Endurance, there is no re-lamping so we can plan our other maintenance activities more effectively. The combination of energy and maintenance savings has made this a very sensible investment for the College,” he added.

Fire Service College – Facilities Engineer

“With the SON lamps we were unable to control the lighting in relation to demand based on either occupancy or daylight levels because of the re-strike times for these lamps,” explained GF Smith’s Process Manager. “As well as saving on installed electrical load, the Intelligence fittings reduce energy consumption through enhanced control,”

“Not only do we have a brighter, more natural light compared to the older building, we are also making substantial energy savings and reducing maintenance costs through extended re-lamping and cleaning cycles,” explained Knauf’s Quality, Safety & Environment Officer.

“The old discharge lamps require replacing about every 8000 hours, whereas the Endurance lamps have an average life of up to 100,000 hours, so they won’t need replacing for around 15 years,” he continued. “The fact they are sealed to IP65 also means there is no ingress of dirt into the luminaires, so they won’t require cleaning. Even our principal electrical contractor was impressed with the Endurance fittings”

“We have been very pleased with the light quality and cost savings provided by Endurance luminaires”

“The pool is used by a swimming club early in the morning and then intermittently by two schools during the day,” explained Flintshire County Council’s representative. “Because of the warm-up time of SON lamps the lights used to be left on all day but with Endurance we can switch them on and off as often as is necessary,”

Just as importantly, the swimming hall is now much brighter. “We are delighted with the effect – the lighting levels are superb and have created a much pleasanter swimming environment,”

Mold Leisure Centre, Flintshire County Council

“Following a competitive tender exercise, we selected Chalmor on the basis of both technical performance and competitive pricing,” explained the Director of Resources. “With so many variables affecting the heating system it hasn’t yet been possible to accurately quantify the savings we are making. However, through our experience of the systems it’s clear those savings make this a very worthwhile investment,”
Reaseheath College – Director of Resources

“TThe LifeSaver scheme has enabled us to greatly improve the quality and responsiveness of our lighting, reduce our carbon footprint and save money at the same time,” explained Ritrama UK’s Managing Director. “Furthermore, there hasn’t been any capital outlay, so the whole scheme makes perfect commercial sense,”

“We have been very pleased with the new lighting, which gives us a brighter light and makes the picking of colour vinyls easier through better colour rendering – as well as helping us to save money,”

Ritrama – Managing Director

“One of the areas we wanted to develop was to attract international sporting events to the centre,” explained the Recreation Manager. “However the existing lighting in the main sports hall wasn’t adequate for sports at this level so we explored alternatives and opted for Chalmor’s Brilliance luminaires,”

“The improved lighting levels have been warmly received by our customers and the fast payback we will achieve from the Brilliance fittings has made this a very worthwhile investment,”

Sands Centre – Recreation Manager

“Upgrading the lighting was one of a number of energy-saving initiatives we have implemented recently. It has brought significant additional benefits in terms of health and safety and improving the working environment for our workforce, as well as facilitating more accurate picking and reducing maintenance costs,” explained Everards’ Engineering & Compliance Manager.

“selected Chalmor because of the quality of their products and the guarantees they offer. And we enjoyed excellent support throughout the project,”

Everards’ – Engineering & Compliance Manager

“The existing lighting was inefficient and the only control was a central on/off switch which was inconvenient to use, so the lighting was frequently left on irrespective of daylight levels through the rooflights or whether the warehouse was unoccupied,” recalled Oxfam’s Supply Project Manager. “As the building is 7m high at the apex, replacing lamps was also time-consuming and expensive,”
