The phase out of low efficiency light sources, in line with the
EuP Directive (Eco-Design Requirements for Energy-Using Products, 2005/32/EC), means that many building operators will find it increasingly difficult to source replacement lamps.
Chalmor is already working with customers to identify cost-effective ways of upgrading existing lighting installations to avoid this problem while taking full advantage of the latest lighting technologies, as well as
Carbon Trust Loans,
Salix Funding,
Capital Allowances and
LifeSaver ‘Pay As You Save’ schemes (see below).
The
EuP Directive works hand in glove with the Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (
WEEE) Directive and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (
RoHS) Directive to minimise the environmental impact of a range of products, including lighting. This includes the gradual phase-out of inefficient light sources between now and 2017.
The first lamps to be affected will be less efficient T8 and T12 fluorescent lamps, as well as poorer performing metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps. Any organisation that is using these low efficiency light sources, therefore, ought to be looking to upgrade its lighting in the near future. Not only will this provide significant financial and energy savings, it will also avoid being ‘caught out’ when suitable new lamps are no longer available.
There are many cost effective options for upgrading older lighting installations – ranging from upgrading existing T8 and T12 projects to T5 lighting, while retaining the existing fittings – through to point-for-point upgrades from older fluorescent, metal halide and high pressure sodium installations. The majority of these upgrades will also open the doors for more advanced control of the lighting.
Chalmor is able to advise on the most cost-effective solutions. We will carry out an initial survey, evaluate the options available and calculate potential energy savings, as well as savings on maintenance and lamp disposal costs, to provide an accurate return on investment (ROI) figure.
We are also able to assist customers with potential tax savings, either by taking advantage of
Enhanced Capital Allowances for completely new fittings or the tax allowances for refurbishment of existing lighting. For example, a £50,000 investment in new ECA-qualifying lighting will effectively cost the business £45,000.
In the case of refurbishment techniques such as upgrading existing T8 or T12 fittings with T5 lighting, while retaining the original fitting, capital allowances are available as long as this costs less than 50% of the ‘new’ cost. So, a £25,000 investment in our
ReNew T5, for instance, would actually cost £19,250 (all figures based on 21% corporation tax).
We can also offer our innovative
LifeSaver Pay As You Save scheme, designed to help organisations invest in energy efficient solutions without major capital investment. Instead, the equipment is financed from the savings achieved!
In addition, Chalmor can also take responsibility for the safe and environmentally responsible re-cycling of used lamps and fittings removed, providing a full audit trail to show compliance with the
WEEE Directive and other environmental legislation.
